DIFFA: Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS
_______
“DIFFA: Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS raises awareness and grants funds to organizations that provide treatment, direct care services, preventive education programs and advocacy for individuals impacted by HIV/AIDS.” – diffa.org
This exhibition was created through a partnership with Poggenpohl Cabinetry showcasing their Dining Desk. The Dining Desk is a table that is adjustable and made of natural stone or wood veneer. It can be opened along its’ longitudinal axis either manually or by a quiet, variable displacement motor. Once opened, it presents a multiple function area with stainless steel plates, cutlery box or cutting board, which can be arranged in many ways. Two trolleys fit exactly into the open areas at the ends, offering additional serving and storage space.
Above the Poggenpohl Dining Desks hangs the Daedalus Pendant by Ivalo, offered through Lutron. This fixture is organized around two delicate curving lines described by the ribs of the central helix. The feathery quality of the glass blades inspired the name: Daedalus. The spaces’ soft, muted tones are continued onto the walls that are covered in custom fabric wrapped panels. The exhibition motif is completed with Asian inspired place settings.
The contemporary Asian theme was captured through the use of over 1,000 origami cranes sculpted from fireproof wallpaper. These cranes were adhered to the ceiling to create a one-of-a-kind art installation within the space. Traditionally, it was believed that if one folded 1,000 origami cranes, one’s wish would come true. In Japanese culture, the crane symbolizes good fortune, longevity, health and healing during challenging times. These themes all harken back to the mission of the DIFFA organization, improving the lives of those affected by HIV/ AIDS.
“Each spring in New York, DIFFA’S DINING BY DESIGN premieres in a brilliant blast of creativity, cuisine and spectacle… DIFFA enlists designers to create and install one-of-a-kind dining environments that awe and inspire. Over five days and multiple events, thousands of guests, including design enthusiasts and industry luminaries, are treated to the visual feast that is DINING BY DESIGN.”
